Box Score CANYON, Texas — The St. Mary's men's soccer team spent its first game of the season on the road, falling to West Texas A&M University 8-0 on Sunday.
The Buffs (1-1) charged on their home field with one key player consistently finding the back of the net to defeat the Rattlers (0-1) before a crowd of nearly 250 fans. Leading scorer Dominic Furness netted half of West Texas' goals with career-high four on the day, capitalizing on a team-high seven shots with six shot on goal in the game.
St. Mary's saw a starting lineup consisting of three of its newcomers,
Jack Wolf (Fr., Richardson, Texas),
Garrett Larrington (Fr., Houston) and
Alexis Santamaria (Fr., San Antonio). Wolf and Larrington combined for half of the Rattlers' total of six shots on the day with Wolf leading with two and recording the sole shot on goal.
Aaron Stares (Sr., Swindon, England) also had two shots against the Buffs, and
Zach Strater (So., Carrollton, Texas) had one.
West Texas A&M displayed accuracy throughout the 90 minutes, taking 24 shots with 17 shot on goal to give Rattler goalkeeper
David Schmelzer (Jr., Castroville, Texas) eight saves.
The Rattlers will stay in Canyon, Texas for their next match against Eastern New Mexico University at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
