Week Eight: The St. Mary's Baseball team will compete in the annual Battle of the Saints in Austin beginning on Friday at 2 p.m. The Rattlers hold a 3.5-2.5 edge with only baseball and softball left in the annual competition between the two teams. St. Mary's won the point for women's soccer, volleyball and STUNT, while St. Ed's won the point for men's soccer and women's basketball and the two teams split the point in men's basketball. Softball is tied at 1-1 with a doubleheader scheduled for May 2 in Austin.
Clean Sweep: The Rattlers swept their third opponent this season, but the first in a four-game series as they stretched their winning streak to six-straight after winning all four against Texas A&M-Kingsville last week. StMU hit .285, compared to .258 for the Javelinas, while the Rattlers' pitching staff had an ERA of 2.58, while TAMUK's ERA was 7.89.
Rotation Shake Up: Junior Gabe Cook moved into the starting rotation at Texas A&M International, while sophomore Derek Maples started the first game of the season last week against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Cook leads the team with three saves, and is 2-0 with a 3.80 ERA, while Maples is 3-0 with a team-best 3.00 ERA (minimum 10.0 IP). Senior Kaleb Gauna and junior Matthew Janecek both moved to the bullpen and responded with strong outings, including Janecek getting the win in both games of the doubleheader on Saturday.
By The Numbers: Senior Garrett Brooks recorded both the 150th hit and scored the 100th run of his StMU career on Sunday against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Senior Kaleb Gauna needs nine more K's for 150 strikeouts in his career. He has fanned 141 in 169 innings.
Patient At The Plate: St. Mary's currently ranks ninth in the nation with 156 base on balls this season. Five Rattlers rank in the top 110 in the nation in that category, led by Ashton Beaird who ranks 44th nationally and seventh in the Lone Star with 21. Raithen Malone, Ryan Alaniz, Garrett Brooks and Matt Mendez have all walked 18 times to tie for 13th in the league and 108th in the nation. The school record for walks is 308 by the 1992 team.
Ball Magnets: Both Ashton Beaird and Jacob King have been hit by a pitch 12 times this season. That number is tied for the Lone Star Conference lead and ranks 12th nationally. The school record for HBP in a season is 32 by David Nelson in 2001, while St. Edward's Head Coach Ryan Femath ranks second on the list, as he was plunked 28 times in 2006.
Eliminating The Freebies: On Sunday against Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Rattlers pitchers did not allow a free base, with no walks and no hit batters. It is only the second time this season the staff did not walk a batter, and the first time was Friday in the series opener, however there was one hit batter in that game. The last time St. Mary's did not allow a free base was Feb. 13, 2022 against Arkansas Tech in a 4-2 win.
Smash Brothers: Sophomore Ryan Alaniz, senior Garrett Brooks and junior Dillon Lopez have hit 16 of the team's 24 long balls this season. Brooks leads the team with seven round-trippers, which leads the Lone Star and ranks 41st nationally, while Alaniz has smashed five, which is fifth in the league, and Lopez has four.
Quality Start Times Three: Senior Eric Tenery has recorded quality starts in each of his last three outings. Against Angelo State, Tenery allowed only one run on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts in six innings. At TAMIU, Tenery gave up one hit with two walks and four strikeouts in six innings of work. Last week against Texas A&M-Kingsville, he struck out one with no walks in allowing two runs on eight hits.
Made to be Broken: St. Mary's turned six double plays in the second game of the doubleheader against Texas A&M International, breaking the school record of four, done 10 times in St. Mary's history. The last time the Rattlers turned four was in 2023 against Angelo State. St. Mary's has turned 19 double plays this season.
League Leaders: St. Mary's leads the Lone Star Conference statistics in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.07), triple plays (1), win/loss percentage (.731) and walks allowed per nine innings (4.08). The team is also second in the LSC in shutouts (1), and is third in base on balls (156), earned run average (5.39), runs (216), and scoring (8.3).
Free Bases: Ashton Beaird is getting on base every other plate appearance. Beaird has an on-base percentage of .510 after walking 21 times and getting hit 12 more. He has a .290 batting average (20-for-69) and is tied for the team lead with 24 runs scored.
Cooking With Gas: Junior left-hander Gabe Cook is tied for 23rd in the nation with three saves, which is second in the Lone Star Conference. He is 2 1/3 innings shy of qualifying for the remainder of the LSC and NCAA pitching statistics.
Brooks Knows Ball: One week after earning both Lone Star and NCBWA South Central Region Hitter of the Week honors, senior 1B/RF Garrett Brooks tied the school single game record for walks in a game with four. Brooks becomes the 13th Rattler in school history to be walked four times, joining Dillon Lopez on the active list, as he drew four base on balls in the LSC Tournament against St. Edward's last season.
What An Honor: 1B/RF Garrett Brooks was named both the Lone Star Conference and NCBWA South Central Region Hitter of the Week in week one. Brooks hit .444 for the three-game series at Sul Ross State, going 8-for-18 at the plate with four home runs, scoring eight times and collecting 12 RBIs. It is his second weekly award for both and the first since Feb. 2024.
Triple Play: St. Mary's is one of four teams in the nation to have turned a triple play this season. In the eighth inning of game two against Sul Ross State and runners on first and second base, Raithen Malone snagged a line drive, threw to Blake Allen at second, and he tossed the ball to Garrett Brooks at first, catching both runners off the bags.
Tie Goes to the Runner: In addition to getting plunked six times in the series at Sul Ross State, Ashton Beaird also tied the school record for stolen bases in a game, swiping three in game two. He is the 10th different Rattler to steal three bases, and the first since Tristan Moreno did so last season.
