FULLERTON, Calif. — The St. Mary's University STUNT team fought hard against two talented teams on day one of the Royal Rumble, but came up on the short end of the scoreboard, dropping a 24-18 decision to No. 9 Trevecca Nazarene and 31-8 to NAIA No. 1 and tournament host, Hope International.
Ten of the 24 routines competed between TNU and the Rattlers (2-4) were separated by two or fewer deductions, making for the high-scoring affair. It wasn't until the third round of the third quarter that the Rattlers didn't score a point, scoring one in each of the first 10 routines.
The 42 combined points between the two teams are a new St. Mary's record, bettering the 33 (17-16 2OT) scored with Missouri Baptist on April 7, 2024.
In the nightcap, the Rattlers scored five of their eight points in the fourth quarter, tallying three in round one on routine one, and two more in the fourth round on routine four.
St. Mary's will face one of its toughest days on the mat in school history on Saturday, as it faces No. 3 Concordia Irvine at 10 a.m. and DI No. 1 Cal Baptist at 1 p.m.
