STUNT Battles Tough on Day Two in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The No. 10 St. Mary's University STUNT team split games on the final day of the Bluegrass Classic, defeating No. 13 Purdue Northwest 20-13 before battling tough against the fourth-ranked Mercyhurst Lakers from Division I, 25-12.
 
In the first quarter (partner stunts) against Purdue Northwest, the Rattlers jumped out to a 4-2 lead, winning routine one within two deductions for two points, and then winning rounds two and four outright.
 
In quarter two, pyramids and tosses, St. Mary's scored at least one point in every routine, including routine three, where the new rule came into effect, which states that if a team is within two deductions, the winning team scores two, and the other team is awarded one point. At halftime, the Rattlers held a 9-3 lead.
 
The Pride closed the gap in the third quarter, jumps and tumbling, outscoring the Rattlers 5-3 for a 12-8 score. 
 
St. Mary's tallied two points on routine four to start the final period, and earned five points on routine one to extend its lead to 19-11. Coach Jordan VanTimmeren called routine eight in the third round, and both teams forfeited, resulting in a 20-13 final after routine two.
 
Against Mercyhurst, the Rattlers were within two deductions on both routines four and one in partner stunts for the 5-3 tally after quarter one, and they were outscored by only one in the second quarter, winning routine four outright and scoring one via deductions on the fourth round, which was routing one.
 
The Lakers began to extend their lead in the second half, winning both routines one and four outright before the teams tied on routines two and six in quarter three. The Rattlers had several falls in the final quarter, pushing the final score to 25-12.
 
St. Mary's switches its attention to the opposite coast next week, as they will compete in the Hope International Tournament in Fullerton, Calif. On Friday, the Rattlers face Trevecca Nazarene and Hope International, while they take on Concordia Irvine and Cal Baptist on Saturday.
