SAN ANTONIO — In the final tune-up before the ITA Regionals, St. Mary's University had five Men's Tennis student-athletes finish with a 2-1 record in singles, while the duo of
Louis Hein and
Bernhard Hauer won the third flight of doubles at the Trinity University Invitational.
Hein, a junior from Hamburg, Germany, and Hauer, a senior from Vienna, Austria, went 2-0 in flight three of doubles action. The pair received a bye in the quarterfinals as the top seed and then defeated teams from UIW and Our Lady of the Lake to win the title.
In singles flight one, sophomore
Lucas Castillo Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) won the backdraw of the tournament. He lost in a close 10-7 tiebreaker to Marcel Miralles from UIW in the quarterfinals before bouncing back to win in straight sets in the west semifinals and a thrilling 10-8 tiebreaker in the finals against Trinity's Jared Perry.
In flight two, sophomore
Lincoln Baldonado (Glendale, Ariz.) lost 10-8 in the third-set tiebreaker in the finals to Kishan Kersten of Trinity after both of his first two opponents retired in the second set.
Hauer also won the backdraw in flight four, defeating a pair of OLLU opponents in the semifinals and finals after falling in his quarterfinal bout to Mateo Galvez of UIW.
The Rattlers take on the South Central Region at the ITA Regionals in Wichita Falls, Texas, Oct. 2-4.
