Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas — The No. 47 St. Mary's University Men's Tennis team faced its highest-ranked opponent since 2023, dropping a 7-0 decision at No. 5 Lubbock Christian on Thursday afternoon.
The loss is the first in Lone Star Conference play for the Rattlers, as they move to 2-1 in league action and 7-6 overall, while the Chaps improve to 16-1 overall and 3-0 in LSC matches.
StMU attempted to grab the momentum out of the gate, but fell short, dropping the doubles point. The number one team of
Leonardo Fabbri (Faenza, Italy) and
Alvaro Soler (Alicante, Spain), playing together for the first time, were broken only once against the #40 team of Kelly Giese and Jordan Georgiev, 6-4. Minutes later, the number two team of
Lucas Castillo Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and
Pierre Copin (Vidauban, Var, France) pulled off the upset of #27 Mattia Ghedin and Marco Seccia, for the Rattlers' first win over a nationally-ranked duo this season.
Freshman
Lincoln Baldonado (Glendale, Ariz.) and
Bernhard Hauer (Vienna, Austria) forced a tiebreaker at number three but dropped the set, 7-6 (7-3), and the Rattlers never seemed to recover, dropping all six singles matches.
Castillo Sanchez and Copin at lines two and four, respectively, forced third sets, but the other four courts were decided in straight sets.
St. Mary's will now travel to Odessa to face No. 34 UT Permian Basin on Saturday. The match time has been changed to 10 a.m. to try to beat the inclement weather forecasted for the afternoon.
