SAN MARCOS, Texas – All four Women's Tennis players from St. Mary's University won at least one singles match and two doubles matches in the States Up Slam at Texas State over the weekend. The Rattlers were the only Division II team in the tournament, competing against Division I schools Sam Houston State, UT-Arlington, UTSA, and host Texas State.
"The girls played at a much higher level than they did last year at this event," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "I believe our two-a-day practices and weight program over the past four weeks made a great impact on their results. They became a lot more aggressive in doubles, and first serve percentages were better all weekend. We just need everyone to stay competitive through the remainder of the semester and the holidays."
Senior
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) and Suryanshi (Bikaner, Rajasthan, India) won flight two in the final tournament of the fall season, going 3-0 against teams from UT-Arlington, Texas State and Sam Houston State.
The junior tandem of
Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) and
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) went 2-1 in the third flight of doubles, taking down teams from Sam Houston State and Texas State, and dropping only one game in each victory.
In singles, both Suryanshi and Wu went 2-1, while Terlizzi and Ospanova were 1-2.
Terlizzi competed in Flight 1, defeating Charlotte Roesch from Texas State in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. She dropped a close third-set tiebreaker, 10-7, to Anamaria Kurtsikashvili from Sam Houston State and lost in straight sets to Diana Kaibara from UT-Arlington.
Wu needed third-set tiebreakers to win both of her matches in Flight 2, but dominated Giuliana Giardina from UTSA in that breaker, winning 10-1.
In Flight 3, Suryanshi won her first bout via retirement, and bounced back after a 6-0 first set loss to Ireland Simme from Texas State to win the second set in a 9-7 tiebreaker before pulling out the 10-6 win in the third-set breaker.
Ospanova took Adithi Venkatakrishnan from Sam Houston State the distance in her victory, digging deep after losing the opening set 6-2 to win the final two sets, 7-5, 10-8.
The Rattlers open the spring season with a pair of exhibitions against the local Division I teams, playing at UTSA on Jan. 16 and at UIW on Jan. 17.
