WICHITA FALLS, Texas — The St. Mary's University doubles tandem of
Louis Hein and
Diego Alvarez won the consolation bracket at the ITA South Central Regional on Saturday.
"We thought the guys competed very well this weekend," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "Even though we didn't get the results we wanted in the main draw singles. We had a lot of tough first-round matches, drawing a quarter of the seeds or more, but you still have to beat everyone to win the tournament. Physically, we looked very prepared, so that was a positive. There are multiple things we need to fine-tune individually to get ready for the spring season, especially when it comes to doubles."
Hein, a junior from Hamburg, Germany and Alvarez, a freshman from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, dropped their opening round in the main draw, but won four straight in the consolation draw, including an 8-4 victory in the finals over the UT Tyler tandem of Manuel Lassacher and Arthur Miquelard.
Senior
Aaron Ben Anton (Remseck, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) advanced to the semifinals in the consolation singles draw before dropping a third-set tiebreaker to Tomas Leguizamon Chaves from host Midwestern State, 3-6, 6-4, [4-10].
Sophomore
Lucas Castillo Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and junior
Evan Walther (Eagle, Idaho) both won their first-round matches on Thursday morning in the main draw, but unfortunately, were knocked out by seeded players in the round of 32.
The ITA South Central Regional concludes the fall season for St. Mary's. The spring season kicks off on Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. when the Rattlers host McMurry at Rohrbach Tennis Stadium.
