Men's Tennis Wins Pair of Titles at Brother Al Memorial Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — At the second annual Brother Al Memorial Tournament, a pair of St. Mary's University Men's Tennis doubles teams won titles, while four singles players reached the finals.

"I think everyone competed at a solid level this weekend and our results speak for themselves," said Director of Tennis Bill Macom. "Sometimes in practice you can't really tell where your team's level is, especially if they didn't compete in tournaments during summer break." 

Freshman Lincoln Baldonado (Glendale, Ariz.) and junior Ian Freire (Guatemala) each reached the finals in flights four and five, respectively, but lost in the finals, while sophomore Louis Hein (Hamburg, Germany) knocked out teammate and freshman Justin Koth (Boerne, Texas) in the flight six finals 7-6 (3), 6-4.
 
Both seniors Alvaro Soler (Alicante, Spain) and Daniel Matheu Baldor (Madrid, Spain) were victorious in the consolation finals of their flights after dropping matches in the quarterfinals and battling back through the consolation bracket for 2-1 records. The two only lost three total games during the finals matches on Saturday evening.
 
Baldonado paired with fellow freshman Lucas Castillo Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) to roll undefeated through flight B in doubles. The duo didn't drop a single game in the quarterfinals or semifinals and won 6-3 in the finals over a pair from Lubbock Christian.
 
Matheu Baldor teamed up with sophomore Leonardo Fabbri (Faenza, Italy) to win the Flight C title in a hard-fought battle over teammates Freire and Koth in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6). Baldor and Fabbri received a bye in the quarterfinals, so they ended the weekend 2-0.

"We wanted to make sure we honored Brother Al and Coach Kimbell during this event, as they both were all about sportsmanship throughout their career," Macom said. "Originally, the plan was to recognize one award winner for the men and one for the women. However, with several nominations from coaches and volunteers, we felt it necessary to have multiple players share the honor as they obviously made great impressions."
