Men's Tennis Shows Strong at Cowboy Classic

ABILENE, Texas – A trio of St. Mary's University Men's Tennis players went a perfect 3-0 at the Cowboy Classic over the weekend as the four teams competed in a hidden dual format tournament at Hardin-Simmons University.
 
Senior Alvaro Soler (Alicante, Spain) won straight-sets victories over opponents from DBU and HSU before fighting tough through a three-setter against LSC foe Jonathan Vega from UT Permian Basin. Soler won the first set with one break of serve, 6-4, before Vega won the second with a late break, 7-5. In a 10-point tiebreaker for the third set, Soler won 10-7 to move to 5-1 on the fall.
 
Sophomore Leonardo Fabbri (Faenza, Italy) won all six of the sets he played en route to a 3-0 record, though he did need a tiebreaker to win the second set over JW Altman from DBU in the first match of the weekend.
 
Fellow sophomore Louis Hein (Hamburg, Germany) seemed to get stronger as the weekend progressed, winning all three matches in straight sets. He only dropped one game in his last four sets and is now 6-0 this fall.
 
Freshman Lincoln Baldonado (Glendale, Ariz.), senior Daniel Matheu Baldor (Madrid, Spain), junior Bernhard Hauer (Vienna, Austria) and graduate student Pierre Copin (Vidauban, Var, France) all were 2-1 over the two days and junior Aaron Ben Anton (Remseck, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) was 1-1, having to withdraw in the second match.
 
The Rattlers have two weeks to prepare for the ITA South Central Regional, which begins on Sept. 26 at the Summers Tennis Center in Tyler, Texas.
