Dominguez Brace Helps Lift Women's Soccer Past Regis

Box Score DENVER, Colo. – For the second time in three matches, the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team netted three goals in the second half for a 4-3 victory, this time at Regis University.

The Rattlers (2-2) broke onto the scoreboard early as junior Shelby Paniagua (Cibolo, Texas) was fouled in the penalty box in the seventh minute. Paniagua nailed the PK in the top left corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage.

Three minutes later the Rangers knotted the score and they took a 2-1 lead in the 31st minute.

StMU outshot Regis 7-6 in the first 45 minutes, but the Rangers held a 2-to-1 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams recorded four shots on goal.

Nine minutes into the second period sophomore Malia Dominguez intercepted a pass just past the center circle and drove down the right side of the field, hitting the top left of the goal on a shot from the opposite corner of the penalty box to tie the score at 2-2.

In the 66th minute sophomore Clara Genitoni (Turin, Italy) was fouled along the sideline. Freshman Alyssa Alba (El Paso, Texas) took the free kick and sent it right on target, allowing junior midfielder Ana Parra (San Antonio) to head the ball into the lower right corner of the goal for the 3-2 lead.

Thirty-five seconds later Dominguez posted the first brace of her career, hitting the high right corner of the net off a feed from junior Sydney Varela (El Paso, Texas) for a 4-2 advantage. In the 86th minute, Regis got one of the goals back, but the Rattlers held on for the win.

At the final whistle, the Rattlers had doubled up the Rangers in shots on goal, 10-to-5, and Dominguez matched the entire Regis team. StMU only took one corner in the second half, while RU took seven for nine in the game.

The Rattlers return home to face their third-straight RMAC team, welcoming Colorado Mesa to Sigma Beta Chi Field on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m.
