SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's University freshman goalkeeper
Callie Gilliam put on a clinic in goal on Wednesday night, making 10 saves in the second half – including a penalty kick – to help the Rattlers earn a scoreless draw against UT Tyler at Sigma Beta Chi field.
UT Tyler (7-4-3, 6-3-2) controlled possession the majority of the second half, and took 25 shots on the night with 19 coming after the break, but Gilliam, a freshman from Lake Jackson, Texas, was an unstoppable force, ending the game with a career-high 11 saves, while
Alyssa Alba (El Paso, Texas) made the other.
The Rattlers (6-7-3, 4-6-2) took seven shots on the night, but only put one on goal, as sophomore
Natalya Hendrus (New Braunfels, Texas) found the inside of the frame in the second half.
StMU survived 11 corner kicks by the Patriots, while taking two themselves.
The 11 saves by Gilliam tie for the ninth most in a game in St. Mary's history, and are the most since graduate assistant coach
Rebecca Difronzo stopped a school-record 19 at West Texas A&M on Nov. 9, 2021.
The Rattlers have only two games remaining in the regular season, playing at Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at 1 p.m. (Central) and hosting Lubbock Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 27 for Senior Night at 6 p.m. StMU sits two points out of the top eight in the LSC standings, currently held by UT Dallas, with eight advancing to the LSC Championship.
