SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University athletics marketing and communications department led the Lone Star Conference with six selections to the Sports Information Student Academic Award list.
Â
Each academic year, the LSC recognizes sports information students who devote countless hours to assist with the operation of the athletics department while finding time to excel in the classroom. To be eligible for conference academic honors, sports information students must carry at least a 3.30 grade-point average with a minimum of 24 semester hours. The qualifications mirror those required of student-athletes to gain LSC All-Academic recognition.
Â
The Rattlers award winners are Olivia Galvan (San Antonio), Bailey Godwin (San Antonio), Laura Poole (Allen, Texas), Bella Ramirez (El Paso, Texas), Jesslyn Schumann (Houston) and Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas). Galvan, Godwin and Schumann handled the majority of social media posts throughout the year and worked closely with the Lone Star Conference Network handling broadcasts, while Poole and Ramirez specialized in photography and videography and Sifuentes aided in covering the NCAA Runner-Up women's golf team, as well as doing research into the history of tennis at St. Mary's.Â
Â
In addition to working in the communications/sports information office, five of the six were also student-athletes, balancing classwork, practice and work. Galvan, Poole and Ramirez were all on the women's soccer team, while Godwin and Sifuentes were on the women's tennis team. Schumann began her career on the softball team before having to medically retire.
Â
Galvan moved into a graduate assistant role in the communications department after the fall semester, while Poole, Ramirez and Sifuentes all have eligibility remaining in their respective sports. Godwin and Schumann both graduated in May with degrees in communication studies and exercise and sport science, respectively.
Â
Eight LSC institutions had honorees on the team. In addition to the six from St. Mary's, UT Tyler had five award winners, while UT Permian Basin and West Texas A&M had two honorees each.
