Game Recap: Baseball |

Late Inning Antics Lead to Split for Baseball

SAN ANTONIO — Both games of the doubleheader were decided in the final inning as the St. Mary's University and Cameron University baseball teams split a doubleheader. The Aggies won game one, 3-1, while the Rattlers won game two, 6-5.

The two clubs wrap up the 2024 season on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with senior day ceremonies scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
A pitcher's duel, game one ended with Cameron winning 3-1, as they plated two in the seventh.

Five different Rattlers each had a hit, while senior Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) scored the lone run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Jorge Cuevas (San Antonio). Senior RJ Galvan (Alice, Texas) drew two of the three walks in the game.

Freshman Braeden Brown (Sinton, Texas) struck out a career-high five batters, getting a no decision after giving up one run on six hits in four innings. Senior Matt Bundy (Whitehouse, Texas) got a tough luck loss, allowing two runs on one hit with one walk and four strikeouts. Senior Andrew Girod (San Antonio) walked one and gave up a single.

GAME TWO RECAP
It looked the Aggies were going to clinch the series win late in game two, but the Rattlers used a four-run seventh inning to win 6-5.

Trailing 5-2, StMU scored four runs on just two hits. With one out, both Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) and Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) walked. Down to the final out, senior Devin Goins (San Antonio) kept it going with a single up the middle for the first run. Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) singled through the right side to load the bases. Both Parrish and Hogan Heller (San Antonio) were hit by a pitch, tying the game at 5-5. After an Aggie pitching change, senior Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) drew a walk on eight pitches to win the game.

Sophomore Kaleb Gauna (Hondo, Texas) was terrific in a no decision. He pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits with a career-best five strikeouts. He received a standing ovation from the Rattlers faithful when he exited the game. Senior Brett Brown (Sinton) gave up two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning and Carlos Flores Jr. (San Antonio) worked a scoreless seventh inning, surrendering one hit and striking out one. He got the win to improve to 2-3 on the year.

Both Goins and Solis had two hits each, accounting for four of the team's six hits. Elizondo scored two runs and he drew one of the five walks in the nightcap. Goins also collected two more RBI on the year.
