SAN ANTONIO — The emotions from Senior Day carried over into game action as neither team wanted their seasons to end. The St. Mary's University and Cameron University baseball teams played 11 innings, with the Aggies eventually winning 9-8.
Â
The Rattlers (20-30) honored their 11 seniors prior to first pitch and Head Coach
Frank Kellner pitched all six in the contest.
Karlo Kalifa (Round Rock, Texas) and
Brett Brown (Sinton, Texas) each needed fewer than 10 pitches to get through their respective innings, the first and fourth, while
Matt Bundy (Whitehouse, Texas) threw only 11 to retire the side in the fifth inning.
Justin Ortega (San Antonio) used 14 through four batters in the second frame and
Tom Symonds (Canberra, Australia) gave up two runs on one hit with a walk and a strikeout in the third.Â
Â
Andrew Girod pitched the ninth, 10th and 11th innings, suffering the tough luck loss. He gave up only one run on three hits, walking two and striking out four in the three innings of work.Â
Â
At the plate, seniors
RJ Galvan (Alice, Texas) and
Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) each hit home runs and all nine hitters in the starting lineup reached base at least once. Senior
Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) and junior
Hogan Heller (San Antonio) each were 3-for-5 on the day, with Parrish driving in two runs.Â
Â
Cameron took the lead with two runs in the top of the third. The Rattlers got one back in the fifth on the home run by Solis. Each team scored two in the sixth to bring the score to 4-3. The Aggies (16-34) plated four in the eighth to stretch their lead to 8-3, but like Saturday the Rattlers had a comeback in the ninth.Â
Â
Jorge Cuevas (San Antonio) was hit on the first pitch of the inning but was erased on the fielder's choice off the bat of Elizondo. With two outs Galvan blasted his home run to right center. Senior
Devin Goins (San Antonio) walked, forcing another CU pitching change. Solis singled to right and
Tristan Moreno (San Antonio) pinch ran for him. Parrish singled up the middle to plate Goins and Moreno moved from first to third on a close play. Heller drove the ball between the third baseman and shortstop, scoring Moreno to knot the score at 8-8.
Â
The Aggies were able to score one run on two doubles in the 11th. The Rattlers threatened in the bottom of the frame. With two outs Parrish singled through the left side of the infield and both Heller and
Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) walked on four pitches, but the runners were all stranded.
Â
The game concluded the season for both Cameron and St. Mary's.
