Baseball Drops Both Games of Doubleheader to Greyhounds

PORTALES, N.M. — The St. Mary's University Baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Eastern New Mexico on Friday, falling 7-0 in game one and 9-8 in game two.

After only managing three hits in the opener, the Rattlers (18-26) bats came alive for game two, but the Greyhounds (20-24) managed to score in the bottom of the ninth to win both contests. The Rattlers scored their eight runs in the nightcap on nine hits with four walks and only struck out twice.

Senior Javier De Alejandro (San Antonio) took the loss on the hill in game one. He pitched five innings, allowing six runs on eight hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three. Junior Cameron Hodges (San Antonio) worked one inning in relief, giving up one run on one hit with a strikeout.

Senior Andrew Girod (San Antonio) was handed the loss in game two. It is his first loss since Feb. 11, 2023, a stretch of 23 straight appearances without one. Senior Brett Brown (Sinton, Texas) started and pitched 1 1/3 innings before giving way to freshman Gabe Cook (San Antonio). Brown gave up five runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout, while Cook gave up two unearned runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. Girod pitched the final 2 1/3, allowing 2 runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Sophomore Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) doubled in the first game for the team's only extra-base hit. He was 1-for-4 in the nightcap with two RBI. Both Hogan Heller (San Antonio) and Jorge Cuevas (El Paso, Texas) collected two hits each during game two. Cuevas also had two RBI.

Senior RJ Galvan (San Antonio) snapped a 31-game streak of reaching base safely after going 0-for-3 in game one. It was the longest streak of the season for any Rattler.

The two teams meet on the diamond on Saturday for game three of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. Central time.
