ODESSA, Texas — After a disappointing start to the season on Friday, the St. Mary's University Baseball team bounced back with a split on day two, winning game one 8-6 before dropping game two 4-2.
Â
Junior transfer
Brendan Concannon (Flower Mound, Texas) was 4-for-7 in the two games, scoring four of the team's 10 runs, driving in two runs, walking once, and stealing a base. Sophomore transfer
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) added a 3-for-6 day with one RBI and a walk.
Â
Both
Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) and
Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) tripled, with Guajardo doing so in the fourth inning of game one and he scored a batter later when
Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) singled back up the middle. Parrish tripled to lead off the top of the fifth,  but was tagged out two batters later on a fielder's choice off the bat of Concannon. Parrish was 2-for-3 in the game.
Â
Senior
Andrew Girod (San Antonio) was credited with the win in the first game after pitching the final two innings and only allowing one hit with one walk. He struck out four. Junior
Carlos Flores Jr. (San Antonio) started game one, allowing one unearned run on three hits with one walk and one strikeout. He didn't pitch the four-inning minimum required in a seven-inning contest to get the win.
Â
Sophomore
Kaleb Gauna (Hondo, Texas) took the loss in game two. He surrendered four runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.
Â
The Rattlers jumped out to the lead in the second inning and never gave it up, scoring two in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and two in the sixth. The eight runs came on 14 hits, while UTPB committed one error. The Falcons scored six runs on eight hits and were aided by one Rattler miscue.
Â
UTPB scored first in the nightcap, plating one in the second. The Rattlers tied it up in the third, but the Falcons immediately answered for the 2-1 advantage. Two more runs in the fourth proved to be enough, though the Rattlers made things interesting, scoring one in the fifth.
Â
The two teams take to the field on Sunday for the final game in the series. Game time is scheduled for Noon.
