SAN ANTONIO — It wasn't always pretty, and it took two extra innings, but the St. Mary's University Baseball team earned the doubleheader sweep over Oklahoma Christian on Saturday, 14-12 and 9-8 in nine innings.
Â
Junior
Isaiah Aguilar (Alice, Texas) provided the winning hit in the bottom of the ninth of game two, completing the comeback after trailing 7-0 after two innings. He drove a ball to centerfield, allowing freshman
Dillon Lopez (San Antonio) to score from second. Lopez reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a single to right field by senior
Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas).
Â
Guajardo had another fantastic day at the plate, going 5-for-9 with three RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) continued his hot streak, going 6-for-9 over the twin-bill, including a 4-for-4 performance in game one. He scored five runs and drove in three. Both Aguilar and senior
Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) were 4-for-8 on the day and senior
Devin Goins (San Antonio) led the way with five RBI after hitting a grand slam in the sixth inning of game one to break open a 14-8 advantage.
Â
Sophomore
Brody Ticer (San Antonio) was credited with the win in the first game. He pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief without allowing a run. He gave up two hits, walked two and struck out two after coming in for starter
Kaleb Gauna (Hondo, Texas). Gauna worked the first 1 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout. Senior
Brett Brown earned his first save of the year, getting the final out of the game after walking the first batter he faced.
Â
Senior
Andrew Girod (San Antonio) improved to 2-0 after getting the win in game two. After spending the morning dealing with an allergic reaction that sent him to the hospital, Girod returned to pitch the final two innings. He surrendered only two hits with one walk and he fanned five batters. He was the sixth pitcher of the game for the Rattlers. Junior
Carlos Flores Jr. (San Antonio) started on the hill but went only 1 1/3 innings. Senior
Matt Bundy (Whitehouse, Texas) turned the ball over to Girod after bouncing back from a rough outing yesterday. Bundy needed only 13 pitches to retire the side, giving up one hit in the seventh before getting three straight groundouts.
Â
The two clubs combined to score 43 runs on 52 hits and make seven errors in the 16 innings of play. In the last six games and in 14 of the last 15 between Oklahoma Christian and St. Mary's, the two teams have combined to score more than 10 runs. The lone exception was a 4-2 StMU victory on Feb. 25, 2023. They will wrap up the series on Sunday at Dickson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.Â
