SAN ANTONIO — Games between crosstown foes are rarely dull, and that proved the case on Tuesday night at Dickson Stadium as the St. Mary's University Baseball team defeated Our Lady of the Lake 10-3.
Â
The Rattlers (4-5) scored their 10 runs on only nine hits, drawing 10 walks, while the Saints (6-5) scored three runs on four hits. Neither team made an error in the contest and the Saints turned two double plays.
Â
The Rattlers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first with no hits as three drew walks and senior
Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) was hit by a pitch.Â
Â
That score held until the top of the sixth inning when the Saints scored a pair on three hits, including a pair of doubles for a short-lived lead.
Â
StMU exploded for eight runs in the bottom half of the sixth to take a 9-2 lead, thanks largely to a grand slam home run by
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) that hit the scoreboard in right centerfield. It is the first grand slam for the Rattlers since
Brian Juarez hit one at St. Edward's in the sixth inning on March 19, 2022. Senior
RJ Galvan (Alice, Texas) also led off the inning with a solo home run to right field.
Â
It is the first time since March 17, 2023 at Angelo State that the Rattlers have scored eight runs in a single frame.
Â
Each team added one run in the eighth for the 10-3 final score.
Â
Cameron Hodges (San Antonio) pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, getting credited with the victory. He allowed one run with two walks and two strikeouts. Junior
Tyler Pauly (Fisher, Texas) pitched four outstanding innings in his first start of the year. He allowed only one hit, walked one and fanned four.
Â
The Saints used seven different pitchers on the night. Roman Rodriguez was handed the loss after giving up three runs on two hits with a walk.
Â
Brooks was 2-for-5 on the day with the four RBI, while Galvan was 2-for-4 with two RUBI and a run scored. Five other Rattlers had one hit.
Â
The Rattlers hit the road for a four-game series at UAFS beginning on Friday at 1 p.m.
