FORT SMITH, Ark. — The St. Mary's University Baseball team scored four runs in the last three innings, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback at UAFS on Friday afternoon as they fell 10-5.
Â
The Lions (5-0) grabbed an early lead, scoring one in the second, fourth and fifth innings before the Rattlers (4-6) broke onto the scoreboard in the sixth with a run. UAFS posted six in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 9-1.
Â
Senior
RJ Galvan (Alice, Texas) walked to lead off the seventh for the Rattlers. An error allowed senior
Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) to reach base in a pinch-hitting situation. With one out, senior
Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) singled through the right side to plate Galvan. Sophomore
Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) followed with his first hit of the day, a single between the short stop and third baseman to score Guajardo for the 9-3 score.
Â
With the score 10-3 in the top of the ninth, junior
Luis Aguilar (Alice) singled to right field with one out and was erased one batter later on a fielder's choice off the bat of Elizondo. Elizondo came around to score on the home run to right field by Brooks – his second in as many games. Junior
Hogan Heller (San Antonio) singled through the right side, but the comeback rally ended on a groundout for the 10-5 final.
Â
Brooks was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Elizondo was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. The top seven spots in the lineup all had a hit as the Rattlers scored their five runs on 10 hits with four walks.Â
Â
Senior transfer
Javier De Alejandro (San Antonio) fell to 0-2 on the year. He pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore
Brody Ticer (San Antonio) and freshman
Miguel Bustamante (San Antonio) worked in relief.Â
Â
Grant Shankle got the first win of the season on the hill for the Lions. He worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing only one run on five hits, walking three, and striking out six. Lukas Petross pitched the final 3 2/3 innings, earning a save.
Â
The two teams have three games remaining in the series and will take the field on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
