LUBBOCK, Texas – Each of the nine student-athletes who competed at the ITA South Central Regional Men's Tennis Championship for St. Mary's University won at least one match over the three days, as did each of the four doubles teams.
"Everyone played at a solid level this weekend," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "There were quite a few matches that went the distance, where we just came up a few points short of a victory. It was good to be on the road for the first time with a new men's coaching staff as well. Caio (Ravagnani) and Angela (Vargas) were definitely put to the test and handled things professionally."
Â
Junior
Alvaro Soler (Alicante, Spain), seeded second in the tournament, reached the quarterfinals of the main draw before dropping a hard-fought three-set match to seventh-seeded Vitaliy Horovy from UT Permian Basin, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 4-6. He won his opening round in a tiebreaker third set before winning the next two rounds in straight sets, setting up the seeded quarterfinal matchup.
Â
Sophomore
Aaron Ben Anton (Remseck, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) reached the semifinals of the consolation round. He lost his initial match to 12th-seeded Germano Setti of Midwestern State before winning the next three rounds. He received a walkover in the quarterfinals and then was broken once each set for the 6-4, 7-5 loss to 10th-seeded Jonas Krahofer of UTPB. Krahofer went on to win the consolation bracket.
Â
Senior
Nicolas Llosa (Lima, Peru) also won two matches over the three days. He dropped his opening match to UT Tyler's Jordi Garcia before bouncing back to win the next two rounds against DBU athletes.  In the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, Llosa fell 6-4, 6-3 to Javier Romero from Western New Mexico.
Â
Freshman
Leonardo Fabbri (Faenza, Italy), sophomore
Ian Freire (Guatemala), 14th-seeded
Oskar Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia) and senior
Ryan Koth (Boerne, Texas) all won their opening rounds before falling in the round of 32. Both senior
Jake Faryniarz (San Antonio) and junior
Daniel Matheu Baldor (Madrid, Spain) dropped their first rounds but won in the consolation round of 32.
"The men are on a much better track than last season," stated Macom. "They seem determined to improve their games."
Â
Three of the four doubles teams won in the first round, the round of 32, with two coming as upset victories. Faryniarz and Llosa knocked out the #8 team from Lubbock Christian, 9-7, while Baldor and Fabbri upset the fourth-seeded LCU team of Herman Aguirre and Braden Tipton, 9-8 (7-3). Faryniarz and Llosa also won in the round of 16 against DBU before falling in the quarterfinals to the third-seeded team from UT Tyler.
Â
Anton and Irdoja lost 8-2 in the opening round to top-seeded Krahofer and Takumi Katsuda from UTPB but won in the consolation round of 16 and quarterfinals, setting up another showdown between the Rattlers and the fourth-seeded team from LCU. This time, the Chaparrals were able to sneak out with an 8-6 victory to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket.
Â
The Rattlers will close out the fall competition on Oct. 27-29 at the Islander Open II, hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
