SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's University Men's Tennis team continued its great start to the fall campaign as six Rattlers went undefeated in singles action at the Kimbell Memorial Invitational over the weekend.
Senior
Oskar Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia) opened the tournament with a straight sets easy victory over Fabian Rosales from DBU, 6-3, 6-2, and then won three of the next four sets in tiebreaker fashion to remain undefeated. He defeated Martins Abamu from Lubbock Christian 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) and Abamu finished the 2023 season ranked No. 24 in the nation.
Sophomores
Aaron Ben Anton (Remseck, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) and
Graidyn Bowe (San Antonio) both went 3-0 in singles play with Bowe only losing six games in his three matches, but the duo combined to go 0-3 in doubles. The team lost the opening match in a tiebreaker to a pair from DBU and then dropped the next two matches by one break of serve, 6-4 in each.
The Spanish juniors
Daniel Matheu Baldor (Madrid) and
Alvaro Soler (Alicante) also posted perfect 3-0 records in singles action with both winning all three matches in straight sets. Baldor lost only 10 sets and posted a double-bagel victory over a UTPB foe.
Freshman transfer Leonard Fabbri (Faenza, Italy) was 2-0 in his singles matches and only dropped three games in the two matches.
The doubles teams of Koth and Irdoja plus
Nicolas Llosa (Lima, Peru) and Soler each went 2-0.
The men remain in San Antonio next weekend, but head across town to compete in the Trinity Invitational on Sept. 15-16.
