ABILENE, Texas – Only five days into the 2023 fall camp, the St. Mary's Women's Soccer team headed to Abilene for an exhibition match with Abilene Christian and came home with a 2-1 victory on Sunday.
The Rattlers scored twice in the first half, as sophomore
Sydney Varela (El Paso, Texas) found the back of the net for the first goal of the match, while senior transfer
Natalie Gonzalez (El Paso) kicked the game winner against the Division I Wildcats.
With 20 minutes remaining in the second half, the Wildcats scored their lone goal of the day.
St. Mary's has two more exhibition matches on the schedule, hosting Concordia (TX) on Friday, Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. at the newly refurbished Sigma Beta Chi field before wrapping things up at Texas Southern on Sunday, Aug. 27. The regular season begins on Thursday, Aug. 31 when the Rattlers welcome East Central to the pitch at 7:30 p.m. after the conclusion of the men's season opener.
