RICHARDSON, Texas -- For the first time in his career, St. Mary's senior
Emmanuel Ewuzie was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Ewuzie helped the Rattlers win a pair of pivotal road contests, handing Texas A&M Kingsville its first loss in division action on Saturday after winning at Texas A&M International on Thursday. The Rattlers defense held the Javelinas to its lowest scoring output (59 points) and shooting percentage (27.4%) of the year.
Ewuzie tallied six blocked shots on the weekend and 12 of his 13 rebounds were on the defensive end of the floor, limiting second-chance opportunities. He was also extremely efficient, shooting 75 percent from the floor. The big man collected two steals, five assists and only one turnover in 53 minutes.
The Rattlers have now won three straight and five of the last six and face three league foes this week, beginning with a Battle of the Saints in Austin on Tuesday.
