SAN ANTONIO – After earning three different All-Region selections in 2022 and two in 2021, it's no surprise that St. Mary's senior shortstop
Jake Mares was Tuesday selected to the 2023 NCBWA South Central Preseason All-Region team.
Â
Mares, who elected to use his free year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the pandemic, led the team with a .363 batting average, drew 35 walks and was 23-for-25 in stolen bases to rank second in the Lone Star Conference during the 2022 campaign.
Â
The Fort Worth native has 189 hits, 150 runs scored, 24 doubles and 67 stolen bases over his stellar career. He is a two-time Lone Star All-Conference First Team pick and has been named to the All-Defensive team in two different conferences.
Â
He and the Rattlers kick off the 2023 season hosting UT Permian Basin, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.Â
