Mares Named Preseason NCBWA All-Region

SAN ANTONIO – After earning three different All-Region selections in 2022 and two in 2021, it's no surprise that St. Mary's senior shortstop Jake Mares was Tuesday selected to the 2023 NCBWA South Central Preseason All-Region team.

Mares, who elected to use his free year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the pandemic, led the team with a .363 batting average, drew 35 walks and was 23-for-25 in stolen bases to rank second in the Lone Star Conference during the 2022 campaign.

The Fort Worth native has 189 hits, 150 runs scored, 24 doubles and 67 stolen bases over his stellar career. He is a two-time Lone Star All-Conference First Team pick and has been named to the All-Defensive team in two different conferences.

He and the Rattlers kick off the 2023 season hosting UT Permian Basin, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
