Lightning Interferes with Doubles; Men's Tennis Wins Two Singles Titles

SAN ANTONIO – In the first event of the 2022-23 season for the St. Mary's Men's Tennis Team, the Rattlers brought home two singles titles and there were a pair of doubles teams who advanced to the finals before they were called due to lightning.
 
"This tournament was a pretty good test for our guys," said Director of Tennis Bill Macom. "Especially the ones who didn't play any events this summer. It looks like from a conditioning standpoint we're in good shape. But, from a tactical angle, a lot of our players are going to need attention on a regular basis."
 
Both junior Ryan Koth (Boerne, Texas) and sophomore Alvaro Soler (Alicante, Spain) won their individual singles flights. After a simple first round, Koth had to battle in both the semis and finals, winning his initial set via a tiebreaker and then winning the international doubles tiebreak scoring third set. On the flip side, Soler didn't drop a set en route to the title of flight 4.
 
Koath and junior Jake Faryniarz (San Antonio) reached the finals in flight two, while senior Sebastian Azcui (La Paz, Bolivia) and junior Nicolas Llosa (Lima, Peru) only dropped two games in advancing to the finals of flight three. 
 
Junior Oskar Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia), Llosa, sophomore Daniel Matheu Baldor (Madrid, Spain) and sophomore Rafael Macedo (Brazil) all finished in second place in their respective flights, while Faryniarz and newcomers Bernhard Hauer (Vienna, Austria) and Carlos Franco (Hidalgo, Texas) placed third.
 
The Rattlers head to Colorado for the Pueblo Duals on Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 17. The team will face Colorado Mesa and Colorado College on Friday before playing at MSU Denver on Saturday.
