SAN ANTONIO – For the second-straight day, St. Mary's senior shortstop
Jake Mares has been honored for his efforts on the diamond as he earns National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) First-Team All-South Central Region honors.

The Fort Worth, Texas native earns his second-straight All-Region selection by the NCBWA after earning Second-Team honors in 2021. This season, he led the team with a .363 batting average, drew 35 walks and was 23-for-25 in stolen bases to rank second in the Lone Star Conference.Â

Mares is the first Rattler to earn NCBWA First-Team honors since Matt McClain in 2015. Five others since have earned Second-Team nods prior to Mares' selection last year. He also earned First-Team All-South Central Region honors by the D2CCA, as well as First-Team All-Lone Star Conference and All-Academic awards.
Â
Haydn McGeary from Colorado Mesa was named to the region's Player of the Year, while Pitcher of the Year honors went to Tyler Blomster from Colorado School of Mines. Coach of the Year was awarded to Angelo State's Kevin Brooks. Seven others from the Lone Star Conference joined Mares on the First Team, while seven were named on the Second Team.Â
Â
The South Central All-Region teams were voted on by a committee of 10 members hailing from the RMAC and Lone Star Conferences. All First Team honorees will be forwarded to the ballot for All-America selections.
