SAN ANTONIO -- One day after earning the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week, St. Mary's senior shortstop
Jake Mares has been named the South Central Region Hitter of the Week for the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA). It is the first weekly award by the association given to Mares in his career, though he was named to the region's preseason team as well as a Second-Team selection to the post-season team in 2021.
Mares had four multi-hit games in the four-game series as the Rattlers took three from St. Edward's in Austin. The senior scored the winning run in the 6-5 extra-inning game three after singling to right-center and scoring from first on a double. He's now had multiple hits in each of his last seven games, raising his season average to .396. In the Rattlers' 18-8 game two victory, Mares tied his season high with three RBI and was on base four times, going 2-for-4 with a walk and was hit by a pitch. The senior scored at least one run in each game of the series and stole a pair of bases. Mares was 11-for-19 (.579) from the plate, scored six runs, knocked in four RBI with a pair of walks during the week.
Mares has now reached base safely in 13 straight contests and leads the team with 11 multi-hit games. This is the first award of the season for any Rattler from the NCBWA.
