RICHARDSON, Texas -- St. Mary's senior shortstop
Jake Mares has been named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Week, league officials announced on Monday. Â It is the first weekly honor this season for Mares and the second in his career.
Mares had four multi-hit games in the four-game series as the Rattlers took three from St. Edward's in Austin. The senior scored the winning run in the 6-5 extra-inning game three after singling to right-center and scoring from first on a double. He's now had multiple hits in each of his last seven games, raising his season average to .396. In the Rattlers' 18-8 game two victory, Mares tied his season high with three RBI and was on base four times, going 2-for-4 with a walk and was hit by a pitch. The senior scored at least one run in each game of the series and stole a pair of bases. Mares was 11-for-19 (.579) from the plate, scored six runs, brough in four RBI with a pair of walks during the week.
Mares has now reached base safely in 13 straight contests and leads the team with 11 multi-hit games. He is the third Rattler to be honored with a weekly award, joining pitchers
Dylan Bells (Feb. 15) and
Josh Buske (Mar. 15).
