SAN ANTONIO – The defense flashed its leather, but the offense wasn't able to get into a rhythm for the St. Mary's Baseball team in its 2022 season opener on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Newcomers
Jorge Cuevas (El Paso, Texas) at third base, second baseman
Jacob Elizondo (San Antonio) and left fielder
Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) all made acrobatic diving catches or leaps to rob Oklahoma Christian batters of hits, but the Rattlers fell 10-0.
Â
Junior
Brian Juarez (Corpus Christ, Texas) had two of the team's three hits on the day, including a double down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth. Guajardo drew both walks in the contest.
Â
Senior
Dylan Bells (Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada) threw three innings in the loss. He allowed two runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Junior
Josh Buske (San Antonio) also gave up two runs on five hits in 3.1 innings with one walk and fanned three. Senior
John Curtis (Athens, Tenn.) gave up two hits in 0.2 innings and freshman
Tyler Pauly (Fisher, Texas) threw the final two innings.
Â
The two teams play three more games, including a pair of seven-inning contests beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
