The St. Mary's Men's and Women's Tennis teams officially kick off the 2022 "spring" season on Saturday, hosting a pair of matches against Tabor College and Schreiner University at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. The two teams will also square off against each other at Noon.
Â
The men's team dropped a close exhibition match against UTRGV last week, while this will be the first matches for the women.Â
Â
Both teams are looking to advance to the NCAA Regionals for the second-straight season after having the 202 postseason cancelled. The women would also like to make a return trip to the NCAA Finals – this season with the men alongside them.
Â
The women's team is extremely experience with five of six returning from last year's NCAA Quarterfinal squad. The Rattlers graduated only
Abigail Csengery, but she remained with the team as a graduate assistant.
Â
The men's team is a mix of talented newcomers – both freshmen and transfers – as well as a core group of returners.
Â
During the fall season, seniors
Maria Garcia and
Ashley Penshorn competed in the prestigious ITA Fall Cup. Garcia won the South Central Regional to get an automatic berth, while Penshorn received an at-large bid.
Â
With 19 student-athletes on the men's team, Director of Tennis
Bill Macom spent a lot of the fall mixing doubles teams around trying to find the perfect combinations.
Â
Both teams appear in the preseason national ranking as the women are ranked #14 and the men are receiving votes.
Â
Admission is always free to matches at Rohrbach Tennis Stadium.
