LCU Scores Last in Marathon Baseball Game Against Rattlers

LUBBOCK, Texas – In a back-and-forth affair, the host Lubbock Christian baseball team scored last for the 13-10 win over St. Mary's in the first of a four-game series between the two teams.

The Rattlers (3-4, 1-4 Lone Star Conference) and the Chaps (7-2, 7-2 Lone Star) traded the lead five times and there were only three scoreless innings as the clubs combined for 24 runs on 23 hits and 14 walks.

All nine Rattlers had reached base at least one by the fourth inning and four recorded multi-hit games as Jake Elizondo (San Antonio), Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas), Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) and Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) all had two base knocks. Solis also led the team with two RBI and scored twice.

Elizondo led off the game with his first collegiate home run, clearing the right field fence. Solis and sophomore Ty Luper (League City, Texas) added doubles and Trey Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) hit the team's first triple of the year, scoring on the play when the right fielder overthrew third in the seventh inning.

Junior Anthony Chavez (El Paso) started on the hill, pitching 2.1 innings. He allowed two earned runs (six total) on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. This was the second-straight appearance where Chavez had four unearned runs score. Junior Josh Buske (San Antonio) threw the next four innings surrendering two earned runs (four total) on five hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Andrew Girod (San Antonio) took the loss, walking three and giving up three runs. Senior transfer John Curtis (Athens, Tenn.) worked the final 1.2 innings, walking one and fanning three.

The game lasted 3:25 and both teams will have a short recovery time as they return to Hays Field for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for seven innings each, while the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. will be the traditional nine innings.
