A Plethora of Runs Scored in Baseball's Saturday Split

LUBBOCK, Texas – The baseball doubleheader between St. Mary's and Lubbock Christian featured 38 runs on 46 hits in 14 innings as each team walked away with a win on Saturday.

The Rattlers (4-5, 2-5 Lone Star Conference) won game one, 9-8, while the Chaps (8-3, 8-3 Lone Star) won the nightcap, 11-10. The teams conclude the four-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hays Field.

GAME ONE RECAP
It looked like it would be smooth sailing for the Rattlers in the first game as they scored eight runs in the first three innings for the 8-0 lead, but LCU scored five in the fifth and one in the sixth. StMU got an insurance run in the seventh that proved huge as the Chaps scored two, but the Rattlers hung on for the 9-8 victory.

All nine spots in the batting order recorded at least one hit as the Rattlers nine runs came on 14 hits, two walks and one hit batter. Junior Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas) was 3-for-4 with three singles, a run scored and an RBI, while sophomore Jake Elizondo (San Antonio) and Corpus Christi juniors Brian Juarez and Brandon Broughton each added two hits.

Senior Mason Minister (San Antonio) won his first game of the 2022 season in his second appearance, allowing only one earned run on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Senior Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) earned his second save in his fourth appearance, pitching two frames. He conceded three runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Schmidt now has 14 strikeouts through 5.2 innings.

Shandon Herrera was credited with the loss for the Chaps. In five innings of work, he allowed eight runs on 11 hits, walking one and striking out three. Koi Carrillo pitched the final two innings, permitting one unearned run on three hits with a walk and strikeout.

GAME TWO RECAP
The script flipped for the nightcap with LCU jumping out to a 7-3 lead after two innings, but the Rattlers answered with five in the top of the third to take the 8-7 advantage. The Chaps tied the score in the fifth, StMU added two in the seventh and LCU walked off with three in the bottom of the inning.

Elizondo continued to have a great weekend, going 3-for-5 with a run and three RBI and he was the only Rattler with a multi-hit game. Senior Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) added two RBI as seven of the nine RBI were by the top four spots in the lineup.

Senior Dylan Bells (Regina, Saskatchewan) gave up six runs on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout in 1.2 innings. Sophomore Brett Brown (Sinton, Texas) worked the next 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore Karlo Kalifa (Round Rock, Texas) fell to 1-1 on the season as the Chaps scored two earned runs on two hits. He walked three and struck out two.
