De La Garza Named NCBWA South Central Pitcher of the Week

SAN ANTONIO – One day after earning Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, St. Mary's graduate student Zach De la Garza earned the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) South Central Region Pitcher of the Week honors.

De la Garza pitched his first career nine-inning complete game shutout, and third complete game shutout overall, retiring the final 22 batters of the game on Saturday against Texas A&M International. He allowed only one hit in the game, a single, surrendered no walks and a racked up a season-high tying seven strikeouts while facing one batter over the minimum. It is the first shutout for the Rattlers since the opening game of the 2020 season - a game in which De la Garza also pitched six frames. He threw just 97 pitches over the nine innings with 72 going for strikes.

De la Garza and the other regional honorees will now be forwarded to the national ballot for a vote for national player of the week.

St. Mary's Baseball will travel to Kingsville, Texas this weekend to take on the Javelinas in a three-game conference set. Friday's single game will start at 6 p.m. with Saturday doubleheader to begin at 2 p.m.
