Box Score MIDLOTHIAN, Texas – The St. Mary's University Men's Tennis team opened up their 2020 spring campaign against No. 15 West Alabama on Friday afternoon. The Rattlers came up just short, falling to the Tigers, 5-2.
"We just came up a little short today against a very deep West Alabama team," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "Their preseason ranking doesn't do them justice. West Alabama is more like a top 10 team."
St. Mary's took two of the three doubles matches as
Jeremiah Gonzalez and
Brendan Brown defeated Christopher Bulus and Ilari Vesanen, 6-4.
Saisaurav Konakanchi and
Bojan Popovic defeated Noah Johansen and Nuuti Jokinen, 7-5.
Popovic picked up the only singles win for the Rattlers in the No. 3 spot as he outlasted Ilia Dehodiuk, 6-2, 7-5.
"We were really close in all the singles and the match really came down to few points. The bright spot is that we did not play our best but we competed and almost pulled an upset. The first match of the season is past us and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's match up," continued Macom.
The Rattlers will continue action in Midlothian today as they take on Ouachita Baptist University at 1 p.m.
