Volleyball Falls in Heartbreaker to Lady Buffs

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

SAN ANTONIO – Despite career-high afternoons by San Antonio sophomores Julia Deais and Catherine Cruz, the St. Mary's Volleyball team lost a heart-breaking five-set match to West Texas A&M on Saturday at Bill Greehey Arena.

Deais had 12 kills, bettering her old mark of 10, with just one error on 31 kills for a team-best .355 hitting percentage, while Cruz recorded a match-high 30 digs, shattering her previous career-high of 22 digs from earlier this season against Edinboro (Sept. 14).

The Rattlers (7-5, 1-3 Lone Star Conference) have lost two very close matches to the Lady Buffs (9-2, 3-1 Lone Star) this season, today falling 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 13-15.

Senior KK Payne (New Braunfels, Texas) led the Rattlers with her fifth double-double of the year, posting 16 kills and 14 digs. She also had a career-high two solo blocks. Fellow senior Bree Perry (Houston, Texas) tallied her third double-double of the year and the 39th of her career with a season-high 49 assists and 12 digs.

Sophomore Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) was the fourth Rattler to post double digits in kills, with 10 and she hit .348 (10-2-23). Sophomore Alissa Tolbert (San Antonio) narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and 17 digs despite coming off the bench in the first two sets.

The two teams battled back-and-forth in every set as there were at least five ties in each of the first four sets and three in the final stanza. There were also at least two lead changes in all five sets – including four in the opening set.

The Rattlers hit .207 for the entire match and hit .405 for the third set – with just two hitting errors in the set that saw the Gold & Blue lead a majority of the way. The Buffs hit .227 for the afternoon and were blocked seven times by the Rattlers (3 solo, 8 assists).

The Gold & Blue defense did hold Torrey Miller, the league's leading hitter – averaging 4.19 kills per set – well below her average – as she recorded just 13 in the match and hit -.019 (13-14-53).
