Volleyball Falters at WNMU

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The road woes continued for the St. Mary's Volleyball team as they fell in straight sets at Western New Mexico on Thursday evening, 25-18, 25-17, 25-22 to kick off the Mustangs Homecoming weekend.

The Rattlers fell to 7-6 on the year and 1-4 in Lone Star Conference action as the Gold & Blue still search for their first true road victory of the 2019 season. The Mustangs are now 4-9 on the season and 2-3 in Lone Star play.

For the second match this season, no Rattlers recorded double figures in kills, as sophomore Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) led the way with nine and she hit a fantastic .667 (9-1-12). She also led the team with two blocks on the night. Fellow sophomore Catherine Cruz (San Antonio) tied for match-high honors with 10 digs and senior Bree Perry (Houston, Texas) led the match with 28 assists. She also had one of the team's two aces on the evening – as did Cruz.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mustangs scored the first three points of the match, including back-to-back aces and never looked back in the first set. They stretched the lead to 8-2 and St. Mary's took its first time out. WNMU led by as many as 11 in the first stanza and went on to win 25-18.

Perry scored the first point of the second set with an ace and the score was tied at every point from one to six before the Mustangs pulled out to a 15-8 lead. Three straight points by the Rattlers made it a four-point set and they fought back to cut it to two, 16-14, but that was as close as they got, falling 25-17.

A kill by Payne started the Rattlers off on the right foot for the third set. The stanza was again tied at every point one through four and again at six, seven, nine, 10 and 11. The Mustangs pulled ahead by two, 13-11 and stretched it to four, 18-14 when StMU used a timeout. The Rattlers fought back to pull within one, 23-22, but the Mustangs scored the final two points of the night for the 25-22 victory.

TEAM & INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Catherine Cruz recorded double figures in digs for the ninth time in 12 matches this season.
  • The three service errors by the Rattlers ties for the fewest amount of misses this season by the team. It is the third time this year the team has missed only three serves.
  • The match between the teams was the first since 2013. The Rattlers are now 3-6 all-time against the Mustangs.
