Home Sweet Home for Volleyball as They Sweep Greyhounds

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

SAN ANTONIO – How sweet it was for the St. Mary's Volleyball team to finally open the home portion of its 2019 season on Friday evening, sweeping the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds, 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 in front of 129 fans at Bill Greehey Arena to win its first-ever Lone Star Conference match.

The Rattlers (7-4, 1-2 Lonestar) snapped a three-match losing skid with the victory and swept their fourth opponent of the year. The Greyhounds fall to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in Lone Star play with the loss.

Freshman Shea Slusser (Denton, Texas) posted career-highs in both kills and digs to lead the team in both categories with nine and 12, respectively and she also hit .333 (9-2-21) for the night in her first career start.

"I think we've been working really hard in practice to hit in sync sets," said sophomore Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas). "Everything flowed really well. Our passes were on point, our sets were on point and everyone was doing really well."

Sims was second on the club with eight kills, and tied for the team lead with four blocks with sophomore Julia Deias (San Antonio). Sophomore Gabi Sandoval (San Antonio) tied her career-high with 12 digs in her first career start as a libero. Both Deais and sophomore Alissa Tolbert (San Antonio) had seven kills each as five Rattlers recorded between six and nine kills on the night.

All three sets went back-and-forth as there were 25 tie scores and 13 lead changes throughout the entire match, with 13 ties in the second set and six lead changes.

TEAM & INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • The eight team blocks is the second-highest total of the season and the highest mark for a three-set match, bettering the six the Rattlers had last week at #11 Tarleton State.
  • No player in the match recorded double figures in kills (on either team) for the first time all season.
  • Tonight marked the first time all year freshman Shea Slusser has led the team in kills as she totaled a career-high with nine kills and 12 digs.
  • Both outside hitters KK Payne and Alissa Tolbert went over the century mark in digs for the season. Payne now has 103, while Tolbert is right behind her with 102.
  • Jasmine Sims doubled her previous high in blocks, recording four on the night (one solo, three assists). Five different times she's had two.
  • Sophomore Gabi Sandoval recorded her first career-start at the libero position and tied her career-high and the team-high for the night with 12 digs.
  • Julia Deais recorded a season-high seven kills and for the second-straight match totaled four blocks to tie her season best mark.
