WACO, Texas – After his first season as a Rattler, Johnny Hernandez was named the 2019 Heartland Conference Newcomer of the Year.

The junior transferred to St. Mary's from El Paso Community College.

"Johnny really just wanted an opportunity, and he took advantage of the one he was given," said Head Coach Charlie Migl.

When Johnny first became a Rattler, the coaching staff was unsure of which role he would fill. Would he play second, short, third, or outfield? After arriving in the fall, they settled on second. It would be a new position for the junior; one he would have to learn quickly.

"When Donnie and Keaton went out [due to injury], he became our strength in the middle," added Coach Migl.

The El Paso, Texas native brought something special to StMU in his first season in San Antonio. He led the Rattlers in home runs (6), RBI (46) and total bases (92). Hernandez also landed a spot in the top 10 in the Heartland Conference in all of those categories.

"I'm extremely proud of Johnny, and very happy that he was chosen for this award," said Coach Migl.

Hernandez is the second-straight Rattler to receive the award.

The second baseman is joined by teammate Zach De La Garza who also made the All-Heartland team. De La Garza was an early favorite, entering the season on the Preseason All-Heartland Team. After pitching 81 innings, the San Antonio native finished 6-6, with a 4.32 ERA. The junior fanned 82 batters throughout the 2019 season.

Third baseman Jake Mares and outfielder Derek Mueller both landed spots on the All-Defensive team. Mares, a redshirt freshman, started in 36 games. The Fort Worth, Texas native finished with a .930 fielding percentage and completed four double-plays. This is the first season as a Rattler for Mueller as well, who transferred to St. Mary's as a junior. Mueller started 45 games for the Blue and Gold, and finished the season with a 1.00 fielding percentage. The Carrolton, Texas native boasted 116 catches, 112 putouts, four assists, and one double-play.

The Rattlers went 30-20 this year, and finished the season fifth in the Heartland Conference.
