StMU Women’s Tennis trio dominates individual All-Conference awards

WACO, Texas – St. Mary's picked up three-of-four individual conference awards after winning the Heartland Conference Championship for the seventh-straight season the league announced on Monday.
 
Ally Maciel was named the 2019 Heartland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year as the league announced its annual women's tennis all-conference awards as voted by the coaches. St. Mary's freshman Ashley Penshorn was named the Heartland Freshman of the Year, St. Edward's Valentina Martinez was named the Outstanding Senior of the Year and St. Mary's head coach Lisa Dausin was named the Coach of the Year.

Maciel earned Player of the Year honors after going 15-3 in singles play this season and 3-0 in the Heartland Conference. Maciel also clinched the match point that wrapped up StMU's seventh-straight conference tournament title. The senior from Sugar Land went 12-8 in doubles play this year primarily from the No. 1 spot where she went 10-8. Maciel is currently ranked No. 24 in singles in Division II, the highest ranking for any Heartland player this season.
 
Joining Maciel on the All-Heartland First Team is fellow senior Alex Corder. The Corinth, Mississippi native went 12-4-2 in singles action. She helped her team to victory over the Hilltoppers in doubles action in the 2019 Heartland Conference Tournament, alongside senior partner Hannah Petersen. The duo earned the doubles point for the Rattlers at the No. 2 position after pulling off a 6-4 victory.

St. Mary's rookie Ashley Penshorn was named the Freshman of the Year after helping lead the Rattlers to another tournament title and going 16-3 in singles play during her first season. Penshorn was undefeated in conference matches primarily playing from the No. 5 spot where she went 9-3 overall.

St. Mary's head coach Lisa Dausin was named the Heartland Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year after leading the Rattlers to a seventh-straight Heartland Conference Tournament Championship upsetting top seed St. Edward's. The award-winning Dausin has been the Heartland Conference Coach of the Year for seven straight seasons.
 
The Rattlers are 14-7 this year and ranked No. 31 in Division II by the ITA.
