Softball falters in extra innings during HC Tourney

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – If the regular season champions of the Heartland Conference are going to win the tournament, the St. Mary's softball team is going to have to battle through the loser's bracket after dropping a 2-1 decision to Lubbock Christian in extra innings.

The Rattlers (30-24) and Lady Chaps (31-17) were tied at 1-1 going into the eighth inning, but a heads-up base running move by Lindzi Klemmer helped lift LCU to the win. LCU out-hit the Rattlers 6-to-5 and the Lady Chaps committed all three errors in the game.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) recorded two of the team's five hits on the day and pitched 7 2/3 innings. She surrendered two runs on six hits, walking four and striking out six on 124 pitches. Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin, Texas) threw the final 1/3 of an inning. Offensively, freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin) scored the team's run and senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio), sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) and sophomore Amber Gonzales (Austin) each had one hit on the afternoon.

Amber Carlton improved to 8-4 on the year for LCU after working seven innings in the circle. She did not allow an earned run on five hits, walking two and striking out three. Jordan Wehr picked up her third save, working a scoreless eighth inning.

The Rattlers will play Texas A&M International at approximately 2:30 on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Lubbock Christian scored one run in the top of the fourth inning, but the Rattlers immediately answered. Licon reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and Carney bunted her over to second. Gonzales walked and both moved up a base when freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) grounded out to the pitcher. Licon tied the score when the shortstop bobbled the ball off the bat of junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) for the 1-1 tally.

The Lady Chaps took the 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth. Johns singled to lead off the Rattlers half of the frame and senior Angie Camacho (New Braunfels, Texas) came in to run for her. She moved to second on a ground out by Moreno and third on a ground out by Licon, but was stranded.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • The two-hit game for Staci Johns was her 14th multi-hit game of the season. She ranks second on the team in multi-hit games, trailing Taylor Germain's 16 in 2019.
  • Both Abigale Carney and Alex Moreno are tied for the team lead with their current streak of reaching base in seven straight games and Carney has the longest current hitting streak at five straight games.
  • Amber Gonzales, who has started in only 25 games this season, recorded her second extra-base hit of the year with a double in her first at bat and she drew her fourth walk of the year in her second plate appearance of the day.
  • After walking just nine times through the first 46 games, Alex Moreno has walked three times in the last four contests.
  • The six strikeouts for Staci Johns were the most in a game since she had nine against Lubbock Christian on April 9.
  • Tiffany Licon has scored four runs in the last three games.
TEAM NOTES
  • Three of the five hits by the Rattlers in the game were doubles, tying for the second-most doubles in a game this season. The team had four two-baggers on Feb. 9 against Colorado School of Mines, and have had three doubles four other times besides today.
  • This was the sixth straight game the Rattlers have drawn two base on balls.
  • St. Mary's is now 3-3 in extra-inning games this season.
