Extra innings spoil tournament title hopes for softball

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's softball team made a thrilling comeback in the bottom of the seventh to knot Texas A&M International 3-3, but a solo home run by the Heartland Conference Player of the Year in the top of the eighth dashed the dreams of a tournament title for the Rattlers.

The Rattlers (30-25) will now wait to see if they earn an at-large berth to the South Central Region Tournament. The Blue & Gold entered the weekend ranked #7 in the region.

St. Mary's outhit the Dust Devils (26-31) 7-to-6 in the game, losing for just the sixth time in 2019 when tallying more base knocks than the opposition (27-6). Sophomore Victoria Aldridge (Elgin, Texas) led the team with a 2-for-4 day at the plate and senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) and sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) recorded the two RBIs.

Nash and freshmen Aracelli Sanchez (San Antonio) and Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) each scored one run for the Rattlers.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin) threw 3 2/3 in the circle in a no decision. She gave up one earned run on four hits with no walks and one strikeout. Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin) moved to 11-7 after pitching the final 4 1/3 frames and surrendering two runs on two hits with three walks and one strikeout.

Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year Jenika Lombrana pitched the entire eight innings for the Dust Devils, giving up two earned runs on seven hits, with no walks and two strike outs.

After the conclusion of the tournament, both Johns and Nash were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts in the two contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Texas A&M International broke onto the scoreboard first with one unearned run in the top of the third after a single, passed ball and an error. They added another on three hits in the fourth for the 2-0 lead.

With one out in the fourth, Nash cleared the left field wall for her fifth home run of the year to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

McLennan retired the first six she faced, entering in the fourth inning, before walking one.

The Dust Devils added one run in the top of the seventh on one hit and a walk for the 3-1 advantage but the Rattlers made things interesting in the bottom of the inning. Moreno singled back up the middle and Sanchez pinch ran for her. Licon singled between the shortstop and third baseman to put runners at first and second. Carney hit a sharp single to the shortstop, who overthrew first base and both Sanchez and Licon scored to knot the game at 3-3 to force extra innings for the third time in the tournament.

TAMIU immediately regained the lead on a solo home run to deep centerfield off the bat of Maddie Schofield for the 4-3 victory in eight innings.
