Softball pitchers hold down potent offense

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's softball team did a great job of shutting down a potent offense on Tuesday, winning  both games of a doubleheader against Lubbock Christian 1-0 and 9-2 at The Park at StMU.

The Lady Chaps (25-13, 12-10 Heartland Conference) entered the day ranked seventh in the nation averaging 7.64 runs per game and neither Rattler (25-18, 14-8 Heartland) pitcher gave up an earned run on the day. The wins move the Rattlers into sole possession of third place in the league standings and the Blue & Gold are currently tied with Rogers State for total wins with 14 each.

Freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin, Texas), senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio), sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso, Texas) and sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso) recorded hits in both games. Aldridge went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Nash was 3-for-7 with two RBIs and a run scored. Moreno went 2-for-6 with two RBI's and Carne was 3-for-5 with a run scored. Junior Staci Johns (Elgin) also had two RBIs on her third home run of the year in the nightcap.

The Rattlers take their final road trip of the year over the weekend, traveling to Oklahoma Christian for a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning on Friday at 5 p.m. and concluding with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Blue & Gold return home to host Texas A&M International on Thursday at 2 p.m. for a twinbill before stepping out of Heartland Conference play for a doubleheader against Texas A&M Kingsville on Tuesday, April 23 at 5 p.m. The regular season concludes against St. Edward's on Friday, April 26 at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader on the 27th beginning at Noon.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Rattlers scored their one run on four hits with Aldridge, Nash, Moreno and Carney each recording a single. Both teams committed two errors in the contest.

Junior Staci Johns pitched her third-straight game where she didn't allow an earned run and her second consecutive shutout. Johns allowed just two singles in the game, walking three and striking out nine to move to 14-10 on the year. She was assisted by two double plays by her defense behind her.

Taylor Franco pitched the first 2 1/3 innings for LCU before leaving due to an injury. Franco is now 10-8 on the season with a loss after giving up one unearned run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Amber Carlton threw the final 3 2/3 innings in the circle, giving up two hits with four strikeouts.

On the first pitch of the second inning, Moreno singled through the right side. Freshman Aracelli Sanchez (San Antonio) pinch ran for her and moved to second on a throwing error by the catcher, who was trying to catch Sanchez off the bag at first. Sanchez hustled to third on a ground out by freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) and scored when the pitcher overthrew first base on a sharply hit ball off the bat of freshman Jayme Johns (Elgin) for the 1-0 tally.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Rattlers scored their nine runs on 10 hits and were aided by four LCU errors. The Lady Chaps plated two runs on four hits with one Rattler miscue. St. Mary's turned one more double play in the game to bring its total to three for the day. StMU stranded four on base, while LCU left five in the game.

Both pitchers brought their season records to 9-4 on the year as St. Mary's sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin) pitched her fifth-straight complete game. She gave up four hits and did not allow an earned run, walking three and struck out two.

Lubbock Christian's Jordan Wehr gave up four earned runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out one in 3 2/3 innings. Carlton came on in relief again, allowing just one hit over the final 2 1/3 frames, striking out one.

Junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) doubled down the left field line to begin things in game two. Aldridge singled up the middle to put runners at first and second. Nash singled right past the shortstop and moved to second on the throw, plating Germain. Moreno ground out to the shortstop, but it allowed Aldridge to score giving the Rattlers the 2-0 lead.

The Lady Chaps scored two unearned runs in the top of the second inning to tie the score at 2-2.

With one out in the third, Aldridge drew a walk and scored on a home run two batters later off the bat of S. Johns to give the lead back to the Rattlers, 4-2.

In the fourth, Carney singled to left center with one out and senior Angie Camacho (New Braunfels, Texas) sacrificed her to second with a great bunt. Germain reached on an error by the first baseman, who missed the throw by the third baseman. Carney scored on the play, giving the Rattlers a 5-2 advantage. Aldridge singled to right center to plate another run and Nash doubled down the left field line to bring Aldridge home. The Lady Chaps walked Johns on four straight pitches and Sanchez pinch ran for the junior. Moreno singled to left and moved to second on the throw. Nash scored on the Moreno hit for the 9-2 final score.
