Softball gets important road split against Eagles

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

OKLAHOMA CITY – In a crucial series in Heartland Conference action, the St. Mary's softball team split the first day at Oklahoma Christian, winning game one 13-2 and dropping game two in a close 8-5 battle on Friday evening at Tom Heath Field.

With the split, the Rattlers (26-19, 15-9 Heartland) move into a tie for first in the league standings with Rogers State with six games remaining on the conference schedule. The Rattlers and Eagles (29-10, 13-7 Heartland) conclude their season series on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin, Texas) had a great day at the plate, going 6-for-8 over the doubleheader with three runs scored and two RBIs. She also walked once and stole a base. Fellow freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) was 3-for-5 in the twinbill with three runs scored, two RBIs, two stolen bases and two walks. Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas), sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso, Texas) and senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) all added three hits on the day and Johns led the team with three RBIs.

GAME ONE RECAP
S. Johns finally got some great run support while she was in the circle as the team had scored five or fewer runs in her last 10 starts, including six of those with two or less runs. The Rattlers offense broke out for a season-high 13 runs on a season-high tying 15 hits and two Eagles errors in the opening game.

Johns improved to 15-10 on the year with the complete game win. She gave up two runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Aldridge led all players with four of the hits, going 4-for-5 and all nine batters reached base safely and eight of nine had a hit in the game. Eight of the nine spots in the lineup also scored at least one run in the lopsided victory and the team was 4-for-5 with the bases loaded.

With one out in the first inning, Aldridge singled to the pitcher and she advanced to second on a groundout to second by Nash. S. Johns walked and Moreno singled to centerfield to plate Aldridge and give the Rattlers the 1-0 lead.

In the second, sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso) singled to left and she moved to second on a groundout by freshman Jayme Johns (Elgin). Christian singled to short to put runners on the corners, but Christian promptly stole second. Germain reached on a fielding error by the shortstop that scored Carney. Christian scored on an error by the catcher, which also allowed Germain to take second base. Aldridge again singled to the pitcher to put runners on the corners. Nash hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Germain for the 4-0 advantage.

The Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the fourth so the scoreboard read 4-1.

With two outs in the sixth, J. Johns singled to centerfield and Christian walked. Germain doubled to left to score Johns and Aldridge followed with a single to center to plate Christian for two more runs and the 6-1 lead.

Oklahoma Christian tallied one run on one hit, a walk and a wild pitch in the bottom half of the sixth for the 6-2 score.

The Rattlers sent 12 to the plate in the seventh inning. S. Johns kicked things off with a walk and she moved to second on a passed ball. Moreno singled to the shortstop and Head Coach Donna Fields used a pair of pinch runners, bringing in senior Angie Camacho (New Braunfels) for Johns and freshman Aracelli Sanchez (San Antonio) for Moreno. Freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) singled to centerfield to load the bases and Carney doubled down the left field line to plate two. J. Johns walked and Christian singled to the pitcher on the first pitch she saw to score another two runs. Germain singled to the shortstop to once again put the bags full of Rattlers and Aldridge singled to center to score Johns. Nash also singled to the shortstop for another run. Camacho pinch hit for S. Johns and grounded out, but plated Germain for the seventh run of the inning and the 13-2 final score.

GAME TWO RECAP
S. Johns went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the 8-5 loss for the Rattlers. Aldridge and Nash also both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored as the Eagles out hit the Blue & Gold 13-to-9 and each team committed one error.

Sophomore Alex McLennan pitched the complete game, giving up seven earned runs on 13 hits, walking four with no strikeouts to move to 9-5 on the season.

The Eagles scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the second for the early 2-0 lead.

The Rattlers immediately answered with two runs in the top of the third to knot the score at 2-2. With two outs, Aldridge singled to the shortstop and Nash followed with a single down the left field line. S. Johns singled to left field to score both.

Oklahoma Christian regained the lead with one run in its half of the third with two hits.

In the top of the fifth on the first pitch, Aldridge singled to first base and Nash hit a bunt single to the catcher. S. Johns singled to left to plate Aldridge and tie the game at 3-3. Sanchez pinch ran for S. Johns. Moreno singled to right field to give the Rattlers the 4-3 lead and freshman Rebekah Hubacek (Bryan, Texas) pinch ran for Moreno. Christian reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, advancing to second on the play, which scored Sanchez for the 5-3 advantage.

The Eagles plated one in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead with four runs in the sixth for the 8-5 victory.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Victoria Aldridge recorded a season-best four hits in the game one victory. Her previous best of three hits came against Colorado School of Mines on Feb. 9. Aldridge has nine hits in the last four games for the Rattlers and scored six runs during that stretch.
  • Staci Johns threw her fourth-straight complete game and her 22nd of the year. She now has 38 complete games in her career with the Rattlers in 63 appearances.
  • Senior Raynelle Nash has reached base safely in five-straight games, the longest active streak on the team. She is one of three players with a four-game hitting streak, joining Victoria Aldridge and Alex Moreno.
  • Aracelli Sanchez has scored a run in the last four games as a pinch runner and has scored a total of 12 runs this season.
TEAM NOTES
  • The team that scored first won each game on Friday. The Rattlers are now 19-7 in 2019 when they score first in a game and 7-12 when the opponent scores first in the game.
  • The 13 runs in game one were a season-high, while the 15 hits tied for a season-most, tying March 23 at Texas A&M International.
  • The Rattlers have laid down one successful sacrifice bunt in the last five games, the longest streak of the season. Twice this season, the team has done it in four-straight games, but this is the first five-game streak with at least one successful sacrifice bunt.
  • Game two was the first time in 11 games the Rattlers had grounded into a double play. It was just the eighth double play the opponents had turned against the Blue & Gold in 2019. On the flip side, the Rattlers defense has turned 17 DPs.
