Softball bounces back with shutout win

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's softball team got back to its winning ways with a 5-0 shutout over Newman on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) kept up her strong performance in the circle, allowing only four hits and striking out six on 98 pitches. In her two games against the Jets (10-28, 4-19 Heartland Conference) this weekend, the Rattlers (23-18, 12-8 Heartland) ace did not allow an earned run over 14.0 innings. She fanned 14 with no walks and all eight hits were singles in her two complete games. The Jets also hit just .167 against Johns.

At the plate, Johns was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while sophomore Juliana Cerda (San Antonio) – in her first game back in action after her brother's horrific accident – went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) scored two runs for the Rattlers and stole a base – her 11th of the season.

The Rattlers remain at home, hosting Lubbock Christian in a doubleheader on Tuesday. Game one is slated to start at 2 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
S. Johns kicked off the second inning with a single down the right field line and senior Angie Camacho (New Braunfels, Texas) came in to run for her. Senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) successfully sacrificed Camacho to second with a bunt. Christian reached on an error by the second baseman, who was covering first base. Christian stole second. Cerda singled to right center to score both Camacho and Christian and Cerda scampered to second on the throwing error by the centerfielder. Freshman Jayme Johns (Elgin) walked and freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) singled up the middle to plate J. Johns and give the Rattlers the 3-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, S. Johns singled through the hole between short stop and third base with one out. Nash walked and was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Christian that put runners on the corners. Cerda hit a ball just past a reaching third baseman for her third RBI of the contest to score Johns and J. Johns followed with a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Christian for the 5-0 final score.
