CLAREMORE, Okla. – The comeback fell just short for the St. Mary's baseball team on Saturday morning as they fell 7-5 at Rogers State.

The Rattlers (22-15, 3-6 Heartland Conference) trailed 6-0 but rallied to the 6-5 score in the seventh inning before the Hillcats (22-10, 7-2 Heartland) added their final run in the eighth for the series sweep.

Both juniors Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas) and Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) went 2-for-4 in the game with Mueller scoring a run and getting an RBI. All five runs and RBIs were by different Rattlers.

Freshman Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) started on the hill for the Rattlers and took the loss after pitching 3 2/3 innings. He moves to 3-2 on the season after allowing four earned runs on five hits, walking four and striking out three. Junior Matt Merrill (San Antonio) did not record an out after facing two batters and junior Mason Minister (San Antonio) threw the final 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking three and fanning one.

Rogers State used four hurlers in the win. Preston Whitten got the victory to move to 2-1 on the year, while Brock Knoten picked up his seventh save.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Rogers State jumped out to the early lead, scoring one run in both the second and third innings and four in the fourth for the 6-0 advantage.

The Rattlers got on the board in the fifth with a pair of runs. Senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) walked to get things going and moved to third on a single off the bat of Mueller, who singled to right center and advanced to second on the throw to the infield. Freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) grounded out to third, but plated Parrish and Mueller scampered to third on the play. Junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) hit a sacrifice fly to right center for the 6-2 tally.

In the sixth inning, senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) singled to left with one out and he moved to second on a ground out by sophomore Scott Short (Ingram, Texas). Freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) singled to the shortstop to put Rattlers on the corners and Parrish took the first pitch he saw through the hole at short and third to score one. Mueller followed with a single to center to score the second run of the inning and close the Rattlers within two, 6-4.

McGowen walked on four straight pitches to kick off the seventh and moved to second on a Perez single. Hernandez was hit by a pitch to load the bases and force the Hillcats to the bullpen. Junior Mitchell Caskey (Houston, Texas) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score McGowen and pull the Rattlers to within one, 6-5.

The Hillcats scored one in the bottom of the eighth for the 7-5 final score.
