Hits aplenty in Baseball's split against Dust Devils

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – Both teams put on a hit parade during the doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Dickson Stadium as the St. Mary's and Texas A&M International baseball teams split games. The Rattlers (23-16, 4-7 Heartland Conference) won game one in thrilling come-from-behind fashion, 9-8, while the teams went back-and-forth in game two with the Dust Devils (14-23, 5-6 Heartland) ending on top 13-8.

The two teams combined for 52 hits over the twinbill, including five home runs, three triples and 10 doubles. Pitchers also hit nine batters and walked another 15 over the 16 innings.

Senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) was 2-for-4 over the two games and hit his first home run for the Blue & Gold. He scored three runs, walked twice, was hit by a pitch twice and had two RBIs in handling the catching duties for both contests. Sophomore Scott Short (Ingram, Texas) was 4-for-7 on the day with all four hits coming in game two. He also drew two walks, had two RBIs and scored one run. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas), senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) and junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso) all had three hits on the day. Hernandez also scored three times, while Vela scored twice and each had an RBI, while Fennell had a team-best seven RBIs and scored once.

Four of Fennell's RBIs came on one swing of the bat as he hit a grand slam in the first game to give the Rattlers the final lead and the 9-8 win.
The two teams conclude their season series Friday at 11 a.m. at Dickson Stadium. The Rattlers then head to St. Edward's for a three-game set beginning on Wednesday for two games starting at 1:30 p.m. and concludes on Thursday at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
Fennell, Vela and Parrish all recorded two hits each for the Rattlers, while Fennell had five of the team's RBIs and Parrish recorded the other two in the 9-8 win.

The Rattlers scored their nine runs on eight hits and were aided by three Dust Devil errors, while TAMIU scored eight runs on 15 hits with one StMU blunder.

Junior Zach De La Garza (San Antonio) ended with a no decision after pitching the first 4 1/3 innings for the Blue & Gold. He allowed five earned runs on a season-high 10 hits, walking one and striking out three. Senior Branson Hall improved to 3-2 on the season after spending two innings on the mound. He gave up two runs on five hits and fanned two. Junior Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) earned his second save of the year after retiring both batters he faced, one via the strikeout.

TAMIU used three pitchers as well. Andrew Hernandez pitched the first five innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out two. Justin Diaz (0-2) took the loss as he gave up the grand slam to Fennell, even though he was only responsible for one of the runs.
The Dust Devils took a 3-0 lead in the first inning off five hits.

With one out in the second inning, Vela singled to right center and he moved to second on a fantastic bunt single off the bat of freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) that rolled down the third base line and remained fair with two outs. Parrish took the first pitch he saw through the right side to score Vela on a close play at the plate for the 3-1 tally.

Freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) was plunked on the arm to begin the third. Junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) flied out to left and the left fielder overthrew the first baseman, allowing McGowen to advance to second base. McGowen moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch and Hernandez reached first after hitting a tomahawk chop to the third baseman, who chose to run McGowen back to third instead of throwing across the diamond. Fennell singled to left to score McGowen and Vela hit a ball back to the pitcher, who attempted to throw to first and hit Vela in the middle of the back. The pitcher scrambled to the ball and attempted to throw out Hernandez at home, but they weren't in time to knot the game at 3-3.

The Dust Devils regained the lead with one run in the top of the fourth and the Rattlers immediately answered with one run in their half of the inning off a solo home run by Parrish. The ball cleared the bullpen in right field for Parrish's first homer of the year.

TAMIU posted four more runs in the top of the fifth to double the lead at 8-4.

Parrish was hit right in the middle of his numbers with one out in the sixth inning. He moved to second on a balk, third on a passed ball and scored on the second balk call of the inning for the 8-5 score. McGowen, Perez and Hernandez all walked to load the bases with two outs, forcing the Dust Devils to go to the bull pen again. Fennell hit the team's second grand slam of the year, clearing the left field fence to give the Rattlers their first lead of the contest, 9-8.

In the seventh, the Dust Devils got one hit, but Panatex came in and recorded the final two outs for his second save of 2019.

GAME TWO RECAP
A total of 25 runners were left on base between the two clubs in the nightcap as the Dust Devils stranded 14 and the Rattlers left 11 in the 13-8 final. TAMIU scored its 13 runs on 19 hits, while StMU had eight runs on 10 hits with three International miscues.

Short paced the offense for the Blue & Gold, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Hernandez was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Parrish was also on base three times with two walks and another HBP and Mueller scored two runs.

Sophomore Jacob Koehler was on the mound for the first four innings in a no decision. He surrendered five earned runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out three. Junior Tyler Dick fell to 2-1 on the year with the loss after working 1 1/3 innings where he gave up four runs on two hits with one walk. Junior Levi Hon (Wylie, Texas) and Senior Oscar Sepulveda (San Antonio) also worked in relief for the Rattlers.

The Dust Devils used five hurlers with Zach Pena recording his first win of the year. He was the second pitcher used, going 1 1/3 innings where he allowed one run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout after starter Andrew Pavon lasted 4 1/3.

The Dust Devils scored one each in the first and third to take the early 2-0 lead.

Short started the bottom of the third with a single to right and junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) was hit by a pitch. McGowen laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the pair up 90 feet. Perez reached on a fielding error by the shortstop that scored Short. With two outs, Fennell doubled to left center to score two runs and knot the game at 3-3.

TAMIU answered with three runs on three hits in the top of the fourth to regain the lead, 5-3.

Parrish walked to begin the Rattlers half of the fourth and he moved to second on a groundout by Mares. Scott singled to centerfield to plate Parrish and Mueller followed with single to left center but scampered to second when the throw came in to third base. McGowen hit into a fielder's choice on a bunt and the catcher tagged out Scott at the plate. Perez walked on four straight pitches to load the bases and Hernandez was hit by a pitch to score the tying run, 5-5.

Vela singled back up the middle to kick off the fifth frame. Parrish followed with a base on balls. Mares again bunted, but the pitcher overthrew first base, allowing Vela to score from second, but Parrish was thrown out at home by the right fielder. Short doubled to left center to plate Mares and give the Rattlers a two run advantage, 7-5.

The Dust Devils doubled their score with five runs in the sixth on three hits, two hit batters and a walk to retake the lead, 10-7.

With one out in the sixth, Hernandez singled past the third baseman and he moved to second on a wild pitch that went behind Fennell. Hernandez hustled to third on the very next pitch, which was also wild and Fennell walked on four straight pitches. Vela hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring the Rattlers within two, 10-8 and send the Dust Devils to their bullpen again.

The Dust Devils added two runs in the top of the seventh and one in the eighth to stretch their lead to 13-8.
