Softball's return home spoiled by Jets

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's softball team didn't have quite the homecoming it wanted, dropping a pair of games on Friday afternoon, 1-0 and 4-2 to Newman.

The Rattlers (22-18, 11-8 Heartland Conference) have been on the road for seven straight games, returning to the Park at StMU for the first time since March 17, but things didn't go quite the way they wanted as the Jets (10-27, 4-18 Heartland) were able to snap a 12-game losing skid in the game one win over the Blue & Gold.

The two teams will conclude the season series Saturday at Noon and the Rattlers will remain at home, hosting Lubbock Christian on Tuesday for a doubleheader, slated to start at 2 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
The only run of the game came for the Jets in the third inning on an unearned run. Both teams had four hits in the game as the two ace pitchers on the staffs dueled it out. The Rattlers left nine runners on base, while the Jets stranded three.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas), sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas), freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) and freshman Jayme Johns (Elgin) each had a hit for the Rattlers and both Johns sisters walked twice.

S. Johns pitched the complete game in the circle, allowing no earned runs on four hits in her 60th career appearance. Johns struck out eight and did not walk a batter in 96 pitches thrown and is now 12-10 on the year.

Dominique Payne also pitched the complete game for the Jets. She gave up four hits, walking seven and striking out two in 112 pitches to improve to 4-9.

GAME TWO RECAP
Newman scored four runs on nine hits in the nightcap, while St. Mary's scored two runs on six hits and committed one error.

Freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) had two of the team's hits, going 2-for-3, while S. Johns, Carney, Aldridge and sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso) each had one of the other hits in the contest and Moreno recorded both RBIs.

Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin) pitched the entire contest for the Rattlers to move to 8-4. She surrendered three earned runs on nine hits and walked three.

Chante Purcella started the game for the Jets and pitched 2/3 of an inning, while Payne threw the final 6 1/3 innings. Purcella allowed one run on one hit, while Payne gave up one run on five hits with two walks and three strike outs on 105 pitches. Payne ended up with 217 pitches thrown over the doubleheader.

With two outs in the first inning, S. Johns hit a bullet back to the pitcher that unfortunately hit Purcella in the arm for a single, but Purcella had to leave the game. Payne re-entered the circle for the Jets and Carney immediately singled over the third baseman's head. Aldridge beat out a throw by the shortstop for a single to load the bases and Moreno hit a single down the left field line that bounced over the third baseman's glove as she leaped in the air and plated two for the early 2-0 advantage.

Newman tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the third with two runs on three hits, but the Rattlers were able to get out of the inning leaving the bases loaded.

The Jets took the lead with one run in the sixth and they added the insurance run in the seventh for the 4-2 victory.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Senior Raynelle Nash recorded a season-high 10 assists in the second game of the doubleheader. Her previous season-high was seven at Angelo State on March 7.
  • Alex Moreno has reached base in nine of the last 10 games. Taylor Germain has reached base in eight of her last nine games. Victoria Aldridge has reached in seven of the last eight contests.
  • Staci Johns has at least one hit in eight of the last nine games and has 10 hits during that stretch. She also has five RBIs in that same time period.
  • This was the sixth time this season, Staci Johns did not allow an earned run in a game (miniumum 4.0 innings pitched).
  • It was also the 11th time in 2019 that Johns struck out five or more in a game.
TEAM NOTES
  • The Rattlers snapped a seven-game streak of at least one stolen base in game two, not even attempting to swipe one.
  • The seven walks drawn in game one is the second-highest total of the season, behind the 10 against Fort Lewis on Feb. 16.
  • Game one was the fifth time this year the team did not give up an earned run, but it is the first loss. The team is now 4-1 in that situation in 2019.
