Baseball struggles to find runs on Friday at Rogers State

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Runs were hard to come by for the St. Mary's baseball team on Friday afternoon as they dropped both games of the doubleheader at Rogers State, falling 6-1 and 7-1 to move to 22-14 on the season and 3-5 in Heartland Conference play.

The Rattlers tallied just 10 hits over the twinbill, with six hits in the first game and four in the second. They stranded seven runners on base during the seven-inning game and then left four on in the second contest.

The two teams will conclude the series on Saturday at Noon. The Rattlers then return home to host Texas A&M International on Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
Junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) was the lone Rattler with multiple hits in the contest, going 2-for-3, while junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas) recorded the lone RBI.

The one run for the Rattlers came in the sixth inning as junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) tripled and came home on a single off the bat of Hernandez.
Junior Zach De La Garza (San Antonio) surrendered five earned runs on six hits, walking five and striking out one in three and 1/3 innings, while junior Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) only allowed two hits and fanned three in the final two and 2/3 frames.

Corey Murphy pitched the complete game for the Hillcats. He allowed one run on six hits, striking out four on 105 pitches.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Rattlers scored one run on four hits in the second game, with Perez, junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso), senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) and Mueller each getting one of the hits and freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) recording the RBI.

Jacob Koehler fell to 2-1 on the year with the loss on the mound. He gave up six runs on eight hits, walking five and striking out two. Branson Hall pitched the final three frames, allowing one run on two hits, fanning three and walking three.

Jackson Simonsgaard improved to a perfect 6-0 for Rogers State after throwing seven frames where he gave up one run on four hits with one base on balls and two strikeouts. Sean Robinson pitched the last two innings and struck out one.

Rogers State took the early 2-0 lead in the nightcap. In the third inning with one out, Parrish singled to right field and Mueller followed with a single through the right side, advancing Parrish to third. Mueller stole second and Parrish scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of McGowen for the 2-1 score.

The Hillcats scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to the identical score of the first game, 6-1. They added one more in the sixth for the 7-1 final.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Johnny Hernandez had his 11-game hitting streak snapped in game two of the set on Friday. Derek Mueller now has the team's longest active hitting streak at eight games.
  • Andrew Perez has the team's longest reached base streak of the season at 15 current games, while Mueller has been on base in 12-straight contests, which is tied for the third-longest streak of the year. Three other Rattlers have reached base in an even dozen contests in 2019, including Jake Mares, Colton Parrish and Scott Short.
  • Ryan McGowen's RBI was with two outs in game two, giving him six for the year and bringing the team's total for the year to 79.
TEAM NOTES
  • The Rattlers had not been held to one run all season and Rogers State did it in back-to-back games. The four hits in game two are a season-low hits for St. Mary's. The previous low was five hits done on three different occasions.
  • The Rattlers defense turned two double plays in game two. It is the fifth time this year the Blue & Gold have turned multiple DP's in the same contest.
