Softball splits a pair of run-rule games

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The St. Mary's softball team earned a split against Tarleton State at the TSU Softball Complex on Tuesday. Both games were run-rule contests with the Rattlers getting shut out 8-0 in game one before bouncing back to win in convincing fashion, 10-2 in the nightcap.

The Rattlers are now 22-16 on the season, while the Texanns are 27-9 after the two-game split. In the first game, the Blue & Gold managed just two hits against Tarleton State's ace, but exploded for 12 in game two, led by freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) who was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

St. Mary's finally returns home after playing its last seven games on the road to host Newman for a three-game series beginning on Friday four a doubleheader at 4 p.m. and concluding on Saturday with a single game at Noon. The team remains at home for a doubleheader against Lubbock Christian on Tuesday, April 9 slated to start at 2 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
The two hits for the Rattlers came off the bats of senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) and freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio). Both were singles in the fifth and third innings, respectively. The team also managed four walks in the contest, but the Rattlers left five runners on base throughout the game.

The TexAnns scored their eight runs on eight hits as junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) also walked four and struck out one in 4 1/3 innings of work. She is now 12-9 on the season after the loss.

GAME TWO RECAP
Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin) pitched the complete game to improve to 8-3 on the year. In six innings, she allowed two runs on three hits, walking three and striking out one for her third complete game of the year.

In addition to Licon having a great game, freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin), junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) and senior Angie Camacho (New Braunfels, Texas) all each had two hits in the win as the Rattlers scored their 10 runs on 12 hits with four TexAnns errors.

The Rattlers scored one run each in the first and second innings and two each in the fourth and fifth frames before doubling that total for four in the sixth for the 10 total runs. The Texanns scored one in the first and one in the fourth for their two total.

The team was aggressive on the base paths, stealing five bases, as Nash and Christian scored two each, while Germain swiped one to aid in the 10 runs.

Nash was hit by a pitch to begin the second game. With one out, she stole second and scored on an S. Johns double to right centerfield for the 1-0 lead. The TexAnns knotted the score in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly for the 1-1 score.

With one out in the second, Licon singled up the middle and she scored on a triple to right center off the bat of Nash two batters later for the 2-1 lead.

In the fourth with one out, Germain singled up the middle and Licon singled to third. Sophomore Amber Gonzales (Austin) pinch hit and reached on an error by the second baseman to load the bases and Camacho came back in to run for Gonzales. Nash reached on an error by the right fielder to score two runs and give the Rattlers a 4-1 edge. A solo home run cut the Rattlers lead in half, 4-2.

With two outs in the fifth, Germain walked, stole second and scored on the Licon single to left. Licon was able to scamper to second on the throw home, allowing her to score on Camacho's single to center for the 6-2 lead.

Christian walked and promptly stole second to kick off the sixth. With one out, she swiped third base and scored on an error by the short stop off the bat of sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas).  With two outs, Aldridge singled to the short stop, Moreno reached on an error by the third baseman and both moved up on a wild pitch.  Germain singled to the short stop to plate one run, while Licon singled to left to score another and Camacho singled to right to plate the fourth of the frame and give the Rattlers the 10-2 final score.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Raynelle Nash has the team's longest current hitting streak at five games, while Bari Christian has the team's longest reached base safely streak at six games.
  • Alex McLennan has struck out at least one batter in her last six appearances. The sophomore has won her last three starts to improve to 8-3 overall and drop her ERA from 3.52 to 3.12 in those three starts.
  • After not scoring a run in 21 straight games, Alex Moreno has now scored a run in two of the last three games.
  • Bari Christian has stolen four bases in the last three games and also has at least one walk in each of the last three contests.
  • Taylor Germain has reached base in six of the last seven contests and has scored seven runs over the last five games.
  • Tiffany Licon doubled her career-high with four hits and her three runs scored is also a new career-high, as are her two RBIs from game two.
TEAM NOTES
  • Game two was the fourth time this season the Rattlers have amassed double figures in runs. The team season high is 11 for runs in a game, done twice, while the team has also scored 10 twice (vs Simon Fraser, Feb. 17).
  • The five stolen bases ties the team's season-high, done on two other occasions. They also swiped five bags against Fort Lewis on Feb. 16 and the first game against Tarleton State back on Feb. 1.
  • The Rattlers are now 19-3 this season when out-hitting the opponent and 1-10 when getting outhit.
